Living with chronic illness

Care from people who get it.

Rest is not giving up. It is part of the treatment.

Many people who come for this have already been through a lot of appointments. The tests that showed nothing… the specialist who was kind but had no answer… the suggestion, offered gently, that it might be stress.

By the time someone is referred to a therapist, being sent to one can feel like being dismissed all over again. As though the problem has quietly been reclassified as you.

That is not what happens here, and the reason is simple.

Nobody should have to manage this on their own.

Our practitioners get it.

Nobody here is going to ask whether you have tried yoga. The starting assumption is that your symptoms are real, that you are already doing more management than anyone sees, and that you are tired.

Living with chronic illness or pain can be challenging and testing at times. You may be worn out from struggling because of the persistent fatigue and pain. It’s difficult to explain to others and they may not understand; you may feel alone at times in your struggle. You don’t have to feel alone and you can learn to live well with chronic illness!

How we are here with you

Feeling it.

Feeling overwhelmed and challenged daily is normal, as well as experiencing psychological and emotional effects in relation. As therapists who understand, either by life experiences, education, or perspective; we are here with you in your journey of feeling it.

Healing it.

We are here to support and facilitate you in your journey of healing. Healing is a process, that can be messy, painful, emotional, and difficult. It is also a process that can be beautiful, freeing, empowering, and flowing.

Living it.

We are here to help you create a life of living well with chronic illness; including tools, support systems, beliefs, coping skills, and resiliency. Life may not feel like what you imagined, or even like it may have once been, but it can be fulfilling and meaningful.

Pursuing it.

Dreams don’t have to end once you realize or are diagnosed with a chronic illness. We are here to help you figure out what pursuing dreams and goals can look like for you, even with the challenges you face.

What therapy actually does for a chronic condition

Therapy will not cure your condition. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. What it does do is well documented, and it is not small.

It treats the symptoms that cut across every diagnosis
Fatigue, pain, and disrupted sleep respond to psychological treatment regardless of the underlying condition.
It rebuilds your ability to advocate
A lot of what makes chronic illness unbearable is the appointments. Getting clearer on what you need and how to say it changes the appointments.
It makes room for grief
Chronic illness takes things: energy, plans, spontaneity, sometimes a career. That is a real loss and it deserves to be treated as one.
It catches what physical medicine misses
Clinicians experienced with chronic illness spot mind and body connections that a provider focused on one system will not.

The Chronic Illness Support Group

A support group for people living with chronic illness to connect and receive support from others with relatable experiences. It meets every other Wednesday at 5:30pm.

Being in a room where nobody needs the situation explained to them does something that individual therapy cannot.
